Overview
Lemosho starts on the quiet western side of the mountain and joins the Machame trail after the Shira Plateau. Eight days on the mountain gives your body the time it needs, which is why this route has the strongest summit record of all.
Itinerary & highlights
Day 1
Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa
Drive to Londorossi Gate on the western slopes, then trek through rainforest to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp at 2,780m.
Day 2
Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1
Climb out of the forest onto the Shira Plateau, camping at Shira 1 at 3,500m.
Day 3
Shira 1 to Shira 2
A gentle day across the plateau with acclimatisation walks and long views to Kibo. Overnight at 3,850m.
Day 4
Shira 2 to Lava Tower to Barranco
Up to Lava Tower at 4,600m for lunch, then down to Barranco Camp at 3,960m.
Day 5
Barranco to Karanga
Climb the Barranco Wall and cross the valleys to Karanga Camp at 4,035m.
Day 6
Karanga to Barafu
Short climb across alpine desert to Barafu Camp at 4,640m. Rest and early dinner.
Day 7
Summit day and down to Millennium
Midnight start to Stella Point and Uhuru Peak for sunrise, then descend to Millennium or Mweka Camp.
Day 8
Descent to Mweka Gate
Final descent through the forest to Mweka Gate, certificates, and transfer back to Moshi.

Good to know
- Climber essentials: every climber gets an oxygen tank on the mountain, oxygen saturation checks with a guide carried oximeter, a private chemical toilet, and boiled and purified drinking water. Please bring your own water bottle and purification tablets.
- Optional gear rental is available: sleeping bag, trekking poles, warm jacket, rain gear, thermal wear, headlamp and hiking boots. Contact us for the full rental list and prices.
