Overview
Machame is the most popular way up Kilimanjaro for good reason. It climbs high and sleeps low, crosses several distinct climate zones, and rewards the extra effort with the best scenery on the mountain.
Itinerary & highlights
Day 1
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Transfer from Moshi, register at the gate and climb through dense rainforest to Machame Camp at 3,000m.
Day 2
Machame to Shira Camp
Steep climb out of the forest onto the Shira Plateau at 3,840m, with first clear views of Kibo.
Day 3
Shira to Lava Tower to Barranco
Climb to Lava Tower at 4,600m for acclimatisation, then descend to Barranco Camp at 3,960m.
Day 4
Barranco to Karanga Camp
Scramble up the Barranco Wall and traverse valleys to Karanga Camp at 4,035m. Short day, good rest.
Day 5
Karanga to Barafu Camp
Cross alpine desert to Barafu Camp at 4,640m. Early dinner and sleep before the summit attempt.
Day 6
Summit day and down to Mweka
Midnight start for Stella Point and Uhuru Peak at sunrise, then a long descent to Mweka Camp at 3,100m.
Day 7
Mweka to the gate
Descend through rainforest to Mweka Gate, collect your certificate and transfer back to Moshi.

Good to know
- Climber essentials: every climber gets an oxygen tank on the mountain, oxygen saturation checks with a guide carried oximeter, a private chemical toilet, and boiled and purified drinking water. Please bring your own water bottle and purification tablets.
