Overview

Marangu is the oldest and gentlest path up Kilimanjaro, and the only route with sleeping huts the whole way. Six days gives you an extra acclimatisation day at Horombo, which makes a real difference on summit night.

Itinerary & highlights

  1. Day 1

    Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

    Transfer from Moshi to Marangu Gate for registration, then trek through rainforest to Mandara Hut at 2,700m. Dinner and overnight in the huts.

  2. Day 2

    Mandara to Horombo Hut

    Climb out of the forest into open moorland with views of Mawenzi, reaching Horombo Hut at 3,720m.

  3. Day 3

    Acclimatisation day at Horombo

    A walk up towards Zebra Rocks and back to sleep low again. This day is the reason the 6 day version has a far better summit rate.

  4. Day 4

    Horombo to Kibo Hut

    Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo Hut at 4,700m. Early dinner and rest before the midnight start.

  5. Day 5

    Summit day and down to Horombo

    Leave around midnight for Gilman's Point and on to Uhuru Peak for sunrise. Descend to Kibo, then continue to Horombo Hut for the night.

  6. Day 6

    Horombo to Marangu Gate

    Long descent through moorland and forest to the gate, collect your summit certificate and transfer back to Moshi.

Good to know

  • Climber essentials: every climber gets an oxygen tank on the mountain, oxygen saturation checks with a guide carried oximeter, a private chemical toilet, and boiled and purified drinking water. Please bring your own water bottle and purification tablets.
