Overview

Mount Meru rises to 4,566m inside Arusha National Park. Because it is a park climb you walk with an armed ranger, and the lower forest is full of wildlife. Many climbers use Meru as preparation for Kilimanjaro; it stands perfectly well on its own too.

Itinerary & highlights

  1. Day 1

    Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

    Drive to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park, meet your ranger and walk through open woodland past the Fig Tree Arch to Miriakamba Hut at 2,514m.

  2. Day 2

    Miriakamba to Saddle Hut

    Steady climb through montane forest and giant heather to Saddle Hut at 3,570m, with an optional afternoon walk up Little Meru for the sunset.

  3. Day 3

    Summit day and down to Miriakamba

    Leave around 2am along the crater rim to Socialist Peak at 4,566m for sunrise over Kilimanjaro, then descend all the way to Miriakamba Hut.

  4. Day 4

    Descent and departure

    Morning walk down to Momella Gate through the forest, with a good chance of wildlife on the way, then transfer back to Arusha.

Good to know

  • Climber essentials: every climber gets an oxygen tank on the mountain, oxygen saturation checks with a guide carried oximeter, a private chemical toilet, and boiled and purified drinking water. Please bring your own water bottle and purification tablets.
